A heady sense of the histories of Church, Monarchy and Parliament pervade Holme Lacy House, a magnificent Grade I listed mansion just 20 minutes from the handsome riverside town of Ross-on-Wye. Until 1909 Holme Lacy was the family seat of the Earls of Chesterfield. It is believed it stands on the site of an abbey dedicated to the Virgin Mary and St Thomas à Becket.
Ornate ceilings, a sweeping staircase and stately drawing rooms, the present Holme Lacy is mainly 18th century, a period of great improvement, as you’ll see when you venture beyond the glowing red sandstone of the house.
